NASCAR Taps Front Porch Digital for Content Storage Management Solution

NASCAR Media Group, which
provides production services and content generation for the National
Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, has selected Front Porch Digital’s
DIVArchive to manage storage of incoming footage, along with an archive
containing more than 50,000 hours of NASCAR film and video, some dating back to
NASCAR’s founding in 1948.
Based on a combination of
software and hardware components integrated to provide a turnkey solution, DIVA rchive
is a flexible content storage management solution that simplifies the process
of preserving, managing, and accessing content for operations of all sizes.
NASCAR Media Group chose Front
Porch’s solution as part of its transition to a tapeless workflow, which will
be completed in time for the group’s 2009 move from its current Charlotte, N.C., facility
to the tower of the NASCAR
Plaza, now under
construction in the same city.
“This project is the
fulfillment of a dream for all of us at NASCAR,” says Scott Rinehart, director
of internal operations for the NASCAR Media Group. “It’s something we’ve wanted
to do since I came to work here seven years ago, but the technology is just
catching up with our vision — enabling NASCAR at last to create an efficient
workflow as well as safe, secure storage in our high-pressure, quick turnaround
production environment. Front Porch has a real understanding of what NASCAR
wants to accomplish and we’ve forged a true partnership to store and manage a treasure
trove of content.”
Each week, NASCAR Media Group accumulates approximately 120 hours of new
footage, all of which needs to be effectively managed and archived. The new
workflow, currently being piloted, relies on VideoBank media asset management
to move clips via DIVArchive between Quantel editing and a SpectraLogic T950
datatape library.
When the project commenced in March 2008, NASCAR Media Group had only
8,500 hours of low-res media proxies stored digitally. With eight Quantel
encoders running two shifts, five days a week, NASCAR Media Group anticipates
that it will be able to digitize the entire archive both in proxy and in
broadcast-quality format before making the move to the NASCAR Plaza
in 2009.
The new workflow will afford NASCAR Media Group’s production staff much
easier access to its own media trove, enhancing production efficiency and
quality. In addition, the DIVArchive solution automates creation of backup
copies of historic NASCAR footage, greatly increasing the security of a unique archive
that is invaluable to NASCAR’s millions-strong fan base.
