Shot Tracker Helps Fans Follow Their Favorites on

By Andrew Lippe
Turner Sports has brought the PGA Tour Shot Tracker to the Web. The capability allows golf fans to track what their favorite golfers are doing and where at all times on
Shot Tracker provided live scoring updates of The Barclays, the first tournament of the PGA Tour Playoffs, and will be available for all future Tour events. Pay-and-play is over, says Pete Scott, executive director, digital partnerships, Turner Sports. Shot Tracker leverages the strengths of the Internet, the ability to personalize an experience on the Internet.
Shot Tracker is based on the PGA s ShotLink scoring software, which tracks the distance, direction, and positioning of the ball at all times. Shot Tracker is the only real-time data source of an athlete s physical actions, says Scott. There is no other place where you see ball placement and a data-feed application.
A player s shot trajectory on the golf course is captured using ISG radar guns. This footage is passed to a ShotLink production truck, relayed to PGA Tour headquarters
Center in
Florida, and then sent to Turner headquarters in
Atlanta, where content is pushed to the Internet.
Shot Tracker provides statistics in real time, instant-replay capabilities, and live shot trails that allow online users to zoom in on specific shots. It also provides three unique views for users following golfers online: Players View displays content in traditional leader-board format, Group View arranges the groupings and pairings, and Custom View allows golf fans ensure that their favorite players are always at the top of each page of the Web site.
It s really for the golf geek, notes Scott, but people can argue that the First and 10 line was for the football geek but now you can t watch football without it. We hope it becomes that way with golf fans, that they can t watch golf without Shot Tracker.
