French Open Men’s Final To Get 3D Treatment

Tennis fans in Spain won’t be able to watch Rafael Nadal go for his fifth straight title this weekend, but they will be able to watch the Men’s Final as never before: in 3D. Orange and France Télévisions are producing the Final in 3D, and it will be delivered live to theaters in Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia as well as a theater in Paris.

Orange and France Télévisions will shoot the 3D final with five stereoscopic cameras set up around the Philippe Chatrier court. The 3D images from the final will be broadcast by satellite from Roland Garros to the various cinemas concerned, thanks to GlobeCast, the Orange subsidiary.

This event follows up on an experiment during last year’s French Open when Orange and France Télévisions delivered 3D coverage to 3D screens within the Roland Garros venue. This year, Orange and France Télévisions broadcast all of the matches played on the center court throughout the second week of the tournament live and in 3D for everyone to enjoy, all the way through to the final. The 3D screens were located at the Roland Garros site, as well as in five Orange stores in France (Bordeaux, Lille, Nantes, Paris Champs-Élysées, Paris Madeleine).
