Canon Releases Three New Wireless File Transmitter Units

Canon U.S.A. has announced the release of three new wireless file transmitter units to accompany each of its three professional Digital SLR Camera models. The three wireless file transmitters (WFT-E2 II A, WFT-E4 II A, and WFT-E5A) provide several new wireless connectivity options to users of the EOS-1D Mark IV, EOS 5D Mark II, and EOS 7D digital SLR cameras.

For example, by coupling each compatible camera with one of the new WFT units, professionals can now fire up to 10 “slave” cameras simultaneously from one “master” using the Camera Linking function. In terms of sports coverage, the option allows for a single in-game moment to be captured from multiple angles using several cameras and a single photographer. This is particularly useful for stadium sports, such as hockey, where cameras can be placed inside goals and in rafters and all fired at the same time by one photographer.

Canon’s WFT units also allow photographers to connect with their photo editor instantly – whether it be across a stadium or across the country. Photographers can use WFT units to provide photo editors with access to their images in real time during a game or event. The units provide access to the camera from anywhere in the world via the Internet as if it were an FTP site, and allow a photo editor to download images instantly through direct file transfer.

“The high-tech world of digital photography has presented professional photographers with new methods for image capture and delivery, streamlining workflows, and providing digital delivery from across a room, or across the world. The level of connection and control offered by our new WFT units along with their enhanced ease-of-use will change the methods and speed by which professionals deliver images and conduct business,” says Yuichi Ishizuka, SVP and GM, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A.

All three new Canon WFT units offer a wide range of wireless compatibility options as well as a wired option to sync the unit into any professional workflow. The units feature IEEE802.11a connectivity (preferred commercial and corporate wireless networking transmission method) and a Wi-Fi Protected Setup option.

The new WFT Server mode allows up to three users to remotely connect to a camera via any standard web browser for global access of images in real-time, providing multiple photo editors with instant access to a photographer’s images. In addition, photographers can remotely control a camera and transfer images to a compatible computer using their mobile devices.

The EOS Utility mode provides full-camera control while remote shooting with a full live view preview on-screen, allowing a photographer to see and shoot from a computer as if the camera were in-hand.

A USB Host port is included on the WFT units, allowing photographers to connect large capacity storage devices or GPS units directly to the camera for maximum storage capacity or geotagging images.

The Canon WFT-E4 II A and WFT-E5A Wireless File Transmitters are currently available and with a suggested retail price of $699.99 each. Canon plans to release the yet-to-be-priced WFT-E2 II A Wireless File Transmitter sometime in the first quarter of 2010.
