The Longest 11 Minutes in Sports

As the biggest weekends of the NFL season approach, every sports fan will devote almost entire weekends to three-hour telecasts of each NFL playoff game plus hours upon hours to the shoulder programming that surrounds them. But how much football will they actually be watching?

Only 11 minutes, according to a new Wall Street Journal study. That’s the average amount of actual live game action that occurs between kickoff and the final tick off the game clock. The bulk of the air time – about 60% – is spent on shots of players huddling, at the line of scrimmage, or just recovering from the previous play.
