Vancouver 2010: NBC to Lose $200 Million on Games

Despite an extensive coverage plan that boasts a record 835 hours of Olympics programming, NBC looks to lose some $200 million on the Vancouver Games.

While Vancouver’s viewer-friendly time zone is expected to give this year’s coverage a leg from the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy, NBC will not be able to recoup the $820 million it paid for the rights to this year’s Olympics.

According to Multichannel News, NBC’s public acknowledgment of the financial loss may be a message to the International Olympic Committee to lower expectations for the bidding for the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2016 Games in Rio De Janiero, which should come later this year. ESPN/ABC and News Corp. are also expected to make a run in the bidding war.
