Broadcast Pix Slate Portable Set To Rock College Video
College, university, and high school athletic departments have a new live-video-production option, courtesy of the Broadcast Pix Slate Portable, a new system for live video production on location.
“Sports is a good example of a market with venues and events suitable for the Slate Portable,” says Broadcast Pix President Ken Swanton. “In the past, to get a unit this small, the customer would have to give up a lot, but not now.”
Slate Portable weighs 45 lb., measures 17 x 10 x 14 in., and includes an HD/SD production switcher, multiview monitoring, clip stores, graphics system with Harris Inscriber character generator, Fluent workflow software, and format and aspect conversion for 1080i, 720p, SD, and analog. The SD version is $20,900; the HD/SD hybrid, $24,000.
“Schools can use this system in the classroom and then take it out to the football field,” says Swanton. “One of our dealers designed the case, and we put a lot of work into this.”
Slate Portable supports eight external inputs in HD or SD-SDI, analog, or a hybrid configuration, plus 14 internal video and key inputs for clips and graphics. The switcher has three standard and three optional keyers, each with a DVE for picture-in-picture and other effects.
Slate Portable can be operated from the touchpad by clicking on either its multiview or SoftPanel. Its built-in monitor can be upgraded to a touchscreen to further simplify operation, and a second monitor can be attached for a larger multiview or a separate graphics operator. A variety of control panels can be attached, from the cost-effective Slate 100 Control Panel to larger 1 M/E and 2 M/E panels. Other Slate options may be added as well, including DVI I/O; control of Sony, Panasonic, or Hitachi cameras; and control of audio mixers. A hard case also is available as an option.
A key feature is Fluent Watch-Folders, which enable clips and graphics to be easily imported from popular editing and graphics systems. Fluent Macros combine switcher moves and specific files for powerful effects. Unlike conventional multiviews that show only outputs and sources, Fluent Multi-View also shows keys, clips, and graphics.
