Vancouver 2010: NBC’s Lack of Live Streaming Stirs Controversy

Several media outlets and blogs have begun to voice their complaints over NBC’s decision to cut down the live-streaming of events from the Vancouver Games compared to the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. On Tuesday, Deadspin published the e-mail address of NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol and urged readers to complain about the lack of live streaming on NBCOlympics.com.

NBC’s Website has provided every single event in full on demand, but many of these are not available until hours, sometimes even a full day, after the event is run. Only hockey and curling are available live on NBCOlympics.com. According to the New York Times, the strategy is an attempt to insure that the Web does not cannibalize NBC’s TV audience and primary source of ad revenue.
