Venue News & Notes: Foreman-Cotto Bout at Yankee Stadium?

Fight promoter Bob Arum is “in discussions” with the Yankees to stage a world middleweight bout this summer between WBA champ Yuri Foreman and challenger Miguel Cotto as the first fight at the new Yankee Stadium, The New York Times reported. Old Yankee Stadium was the site for numerous famous fights, featuring boxing’s biggest stars: Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali, among many others. The Foreman-Cotto bout, scheduled for June 12 at Madison Square Garden, would have “obvious appeal” at the Stadium because, The Times noted, Foreman is Jewish and Cotto is Puerto Rican and there are large Jewish and Puerto Rican communities in New York…

…Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has stated his interest in staging a regular season or playoff Mavericks game at Cowboys Stadium. The Cowboys return that interest.  “We would love to explore that,” says Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ chief operating officer. In the wake of the record crowd for the NBA All-Star Game, Cuban told reporters he would like to look into playing an occasional Mavericks game at the stadium if he could make the economics work, but he had yet to run the idea by Jerry Jones or NBA commissioner David Stern…

…The Miami Herald reported that the Marlins expect to land the 2015 All-Star Game for their new stadium, which will open in 2012. “If you thought we would host the All-Star Game in 2015, you would probably not be misleading yourself,”’ team president David Samson told fans at Super Bowl FanFest at Sun Life Stadium. Samson said that, while the Marlins haven’t been assured of the 2015 game, “we’re pretty confident that will be the year…”

…Lee County commissioners have approved the zoning changes needed for the new Boston Red Sox spring training stadium in south Lee County. This week’s 4-1 vote clears the way for actually building the new 11,000-seat stadium. Commissioner Brian Bigelow, who was opposed, questioned the access to the stadium and what game crowds would do to traffic on Daniels Parkway. “Dispersal of traffic is so crucial,” he said. “Everybody’s rushing to the game and rushing to get out…”

…The developer heading up efforts to build a new stadium in Los Angeles says the NFL’s return to the city may just be 18 months away. John Semcken, the VP of Majestic Realty, which is behind an $800 million stadium project that has received state approval, told the Boston Globe he thinks he can lure an NFL team to Los Angeles after next season: “I strongly believe an NFL franchise will play in Los Angeles for the 2011 season. …The British government’s Olympic Minister says the country’s Olympic Stadium will be used for track and field after the 2012 London Games despite West Ham’s desire to use it for Premier League soccer. David Gold and David Sullivan took over the east London club last month and said they wanted to move the team to the nearby Olympic Stadium but Tessa Jowell says that will not happen. Jowell says the stadium will be used for “grand prix athletics…”

Beijing is hosting its own version of the Winter Olympics – though the idea may be on thin ice. Inside the architectural wonder of the capital’s National Stadium, children on rubber doughnuts race on the snow. Teenagers and adults slide slowly down a low ski slope. In the background, a band plays ’90s Chinese rock on a stage flanked by fake snow peaks. The snow park is the latest effort to create a new life for the stadium, known as the Bird’s Nest. The “Happy Snow and Ice Season” will run all winter at the stadium where Chinese directors staged a stunning opening ceremony for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Now slushy mounds of machine-made snow and a single ski slope occupy the grounds.
