Vancouver 2010: Ericsson Supplies Encoding Solutions for NBC

For the third consecutive Olympic Games, NBC is utilizing Ericsson encoding solutions for its coverage. After working with NBC Olypmics on the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2006 Winter Olympics from Torino, Italy, Ericsson is now providing encoding solutions for the network’s 835 hours of total coverage at the Vancouver Games.

NBC is deploying a variety of Ericsson products including MPEG-4 AVC HD encoders, professional receiver/decoders, multiplexers, modulators, IP adapters and high availability control and management systems.  The Ericsson systems are compressing NBC’s HD content into both contribution and distribution feeds to support high picture quality from venue to viewer.

“The exceptional picture quality of Ericsson’s contribution and distribution products is sure to please our most demanding viewers,” said Dave Mazza, Senior Vice President of Engineering, NBC Olympics. “Having worked closely with Ericsson at previous Winter and Summer Games, we knew that we could count on them to deliver an advanced solution for our most ambitious winter coverage plans ever.”

Ericsson also has technical staff onsite in Vancouver and New York to secure technical perfection.

“Those of us watching are amazed by the outstanding picture quality, the abundance of coverage and the ability to view online, also in HD, what we might have missed live,” said Staffan Pehrson, Head of Solution Area TV, Ericsson.
