Venue News & Notes: Olympics in Cowboys Stadium?

When it comes to sports, there may be nothing that Cowboys Stadium can’t handle and nothing that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones won’t try to put in the stadium. David Moore on the Cowboys blog reports that Jones was asked Sunday if his recent excursion to Vancouver was a scouting trip to prepare a future bid for the Summer Olympics that would be staged around the Metroplex and at Cowboys Stadium. You may recall that, in the late 1990s, the region went after the 2012 Olympics (won by London), but it didn’t have Cowboys Stadium as a potential arena back then. “Hey, I’ll tell you what,” Jones said. “Truthfully, we are looking at possibly doing one of the big qualifying swimming deals [tournament] there”…

…Major League Baseball is still considering Fremont and Oakland, CA, as a future home for the Oakland A’s, Fremont City Manager Fred Diaz said Friday. He said he expects to meet with baseball officials within the next two weeks to discuss the city’s proposal for a baseball stadium in south Fremont on land owned by the NUMMI auto plant. Diaz said baseball officials asked him earlier in the week for more details on acquiring the site, as well as on-site and off-site infrastructure improvements…

…The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee has withdrawn its bid to host the Super Bowl in 2014, an NFL spokesman said this week. The remaining candidates are now New York, Miami, and Tampa, FL. There is no basis for declaring a front-runner, the spokesman said. No presentations have been made to the ownership, and no poll of the owners has been taken. League owners will award the game at their annual meeting in May…

…The head of the new Meadowlands Stadium says Arizona’s decision not to bid on the 2014 Super Bowl doesn’t necessarily make the future home of the Giants and Jets the favorite to land the NFL title game. Mark Lamping said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press that the New Meadowlands Stadium Companies is concentrating solely on presenting a compelling bid to the league by the April 1 deadline. The Jets and Giants will start play in their new 82,500-seat, $1.6 billion stadium this season…

Developers could soon break ground on a massive New York City project that includes a professional basketball arena. A state Supreme Court judge in Brooklyn on Monday rejected a legal challenge by homeowners and businesses to the state’s use of eminent domain for the $4.9 billion, 22-acre Atlantic Yards project. Developer Bruce Ratner has proposed building office towers, apartments, and an arena for the New Jersey Nets. A state agency will seize the property, which will then be controlled by Ratner’s development company…

…Another small step is taken toward sealing a deal to build the Houston Dynamo soccer stadium. The Harris County Sports Authority has appointed a task force to look into the project after the city and county asked it to get involved. The task force will talk with city and county officials to find out exactly what is needed of the Sports Authority. Here’s what’s proposed: The city and county would own the land. Each would give $10 million to build the $80 million stadium. Dynamo owners would pay the rest.
