Australia’s WIN Television Brings in Masstech’s MassStore System

WIN Television, Australia’s leading regional broadcaster, has selected Masstech’s MassStore system to serve its ingest, archiving and digital asset management (DAM) needs. The Broadcast Operations Centre in Wollongong will install a MassStore DAM system with Masstech’s XT-Ingest CUB-2000 and MassStore COBALT real time system monitoring In addition, Masstech and local dealer, Techtel, will provide all applicable equipment and professional services.

The MassStore all-in-one asset management system features Masstech’s file-based workflow management technology to manage priority requests and missing media, as well as provide the critical interface to the playout centre for the delivery of digital content. It will perform content preparation, format conversions, and federated content gathering. A smaller MassStore TOPAZ system is being deployed regionally to federate content migration between WIN’s regional Final Cut Pro (FCP) commercial production units.

“We chose Masstech because of their expertise and their clear understanding of our goals,” says John Smithers, director network broadcast engineering at WIN Corp.  “As part of the project, Masstech has also been commissioned to interface and integrate with our Media Hub playout centre being built for the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and WIN.”

Masstech’s XT-Ingest CUB-2000 is an automated ingest IT server-based appliance for baseband recording and OP56 metadata management. Using Masstech’s own CUB-2000 PC encoder card, this flexible high quality ingest appliance solves many interoperability issues and directly connects to the MassStore DAM for ease of use. Ingested material will be in the Grass Valley Group (GVG) K2 GXF playout format as single-file multi-segment content.  Metadata can be pre-populated in advance either from WIN’s traffic system or by operators who can use the ingest stations to specify the key number as well as the required OP56 metadata. Configured to Masstech’s specifications, dual high performance IBM DS5000 series disk caches will provide content parking and load balancing.

“MassStore has solved all our asset management issues with its unique ability to ingest and connect every part of our new playout operation,” says Anthony Colquhoun, network engineering manager at WIN Television. “Masstech has proven its integration with GVG, CS2, Avid, FCP and managed the critical metadata we require for all operations.”

MassStore COBALT real time monitoring technology will provide predictive analysis of file-based content throughout the entire workflow using Complex Event Processing (CEP). An advanced dashboard display will indicate the status and performance of various devices such as data tape libraries, video servers, IT switches, hard disk arrays and servers across all of WIN’s file-based workflows, including ingest, QC and Disaster Recovery (DR).

“We are very pleased that our solution is chosen by such a progressive organization,” says Joe French, CEO and President of Masstech Group. “We strive to deliver state-of-the-art products to our clients worldwide that solve, streamline and automate complex workflows with a sophisticated MAM solution that provides more than 160 broadcast device interfaces and more than 60 transcoding formats. They depend on Masstech; and we are very proud to have earned this trust.”
