Venue News & Notes: Commission To Recommend A’s Move to San Jose

Major League Baseball is set to report that its MLB Baseball Stadium Commission, formed to evaluate the Oakland A’s stadium situation, is going to recommend to MLB Commissioner Bud Selig that the Oakland A’s move to San Jose, CA. The news came too late in the night Monday to check with appropriate key players for their reaction, but it’s fair to say one person who will not be pleased is Oakland City Attorney John Russo, who has openly said he’s considering a lawsuit against both the Athletics and the City of San Jose. The reasons MLB would pick San Jose over Oakland will be listed in the report, set to be released within three days…

…Part of March Madness will live on in Pittsburgh. City-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority board members are buying one of the floors used in this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament for use in the city’s new Consol Energy Center. The floor, manufactured by Connor Sport Court International of Salt Lake City, will cost $86,548. It was one of five contracts totaling $520,593 awarded Friday by the board for the arena, scheduled to open in August…

…As far as dress rehearsals go, last weekend’s NCAA South Regional at Reliant Stadium in Houston provides an intriguing glimpse of what’s to come. With 45,505 college basketball fans crammed into the Texans’ home venue Friday night to watch Baylor oust Saint Mary’s and Duke dispatch Purdue, attendance was the second-highest ever for a preliminary-round session in the NCAA Tournament. Attention is already shifting to 2011, when Houston will be at the center of the college basketball universe as host of the men’s Final Four

…This week, the Citizens FOR Jobs and the Lincoln, NE, Haymarket Arena and some of its 9,400-plus Facebook fans will kick off a door-to-door campaign from its downtown office. For years, supporters have promoted building a new arena to replace the 50-year-old Pershing Center. For the past two months, No2Arena, formed after a few meetings in public libraries and church basements, has worked to persuade residents to vote no on the ballot question that seeks approval for a portion of the arena funding…

…These days, everyone is talking about that new sports venue on the other side of the block: the fancy outdoor baseball park with the limestone exterior, cool scoreboard, and outdoor plaza. The new home of the Minnesota Twins went so far as to steal Target Center’s first name. Compared with its new neighbor, Target Center is yesterday’s news. Target Field is Hannah Montana; Target Center is Marie Osmond. Nothing seems to be going Target Center’s way. This spring, the city of Minneapolis, which owns Target Center, asked for $6.5 million in state bonding money — a relatively modest amount by pro-sports-arena standards — for a series of building upgrades.
