BYU Broadcasting Equips New HD Truck with Miranda Routers, Monitors

Brigham Young University Broadcasting (BYUB) has completed the build of a new 51-foot HD mobile production truck, which is equipped with Miranda routing, interfacing, and monitoring systems.

Diversified Systems built the new truck, which features eight HD cameras. It represents a key part of BYUB’s plan to increase and improve content production for transmission to the 60 million households that tune in to BYU TV, KBYU, and BYU TV International around the world.

“BYU Broadcasting is a long-term, and very satisfied owner of NVISION routing systems, and so we made a comfortable decision to go with Miranda products for the truck’s routing infrastructure,” says Brandon Smith, Chief Technology Officer at BYU Broadcasting. “This was combined with Miranda’s interfacing, monitoring and control products”

The router system comprises Miranda’s compact and light weight NVISION 8288 truck video router, configured 144 x 288, as well as an NVISION 7256 audio router, configured as 240 x 224 AES and 16 x 32 analog video.

The signal processing is based on Densité interface modules. A combination of 2RU and 3RU Densité frames house over 150 cards, including the XVP-3901 up/down/cross and audio processor, and the DAP-1781 digital audio processor. All the interfacing modules are supervised by an iControl monitoring system, which provides a highly graphical representation of the signal feeds.

Thirteen Kaleido-X16 multi-viewers (16×2) are installed in the truck, along with an XEdit layout editor for managing the source sharing and layout presentation. A total of 80 sources are displayed across eight LCD panels in the Production Control room; 12 screens in the EVS/Tape area; two screens in Video Shading; a single screen in Audio; and a single monitor in Engineering.

‘The Kaleido-X16 multi-viewer system offers maximum flexibility for the variety of productions we handle with the truck – sports, concerts, conferences, and forums,” says Smith. “We can quickly and easily switch between layout configurations for different events, with just the touch of a button.”
