NAB Preview: Motorola Looks To Offer 3D Transmission Solutions

Consumers are demanding more and more HD content. Next-generation HD formats such as 1080p60 and 3D are also on the horizon for many sports producers. Yet network capacity is at a premium. At half the bandwidth of MPEG-2, MPEG-4 provides programmers with a bandwidth-efficient alternative to delivering exceptional-quality video and is better for delivering next-generation video signals, such as 1080p60 and 3D. Motorola will be demonstrating MPEG-4 HD program distribution, enabling programmers to transmit high-quality digital video as part of a modular uplink solution for delivery via a DVB-S2 satellite carrier. On display for operators as part of downlink, IRDs receive MPEG-4 signals or transcode to MPEG-2 for compatibility with existing cable systems.

There is a lot of buzz around 3D TV, but what about delivering 3D signals to the living room? Several content providers have announced intentions of offering 3D content in 2010, including sports programming. At NAB, Motorola will demonstrate delivery of 3D signals to a cable set-top using existing hardware and network infrastructure. A number of challenges are associated with delivering a 3D signal to the home, and this demonstration will showcase real-world solutions that address such challenges as graphics, closed-captioning, detection of 2D versus 3D signals, and detection of 3D formats.
