Ericsson Puts Focus on ATSC Solutions at NAB

At the NAB 2010 show, Ericsson will unveil its new ATSC system for fixed terrestrial services, including the launch of a new MPEG-2 HD encoder that improves current MPEG-2 bit rate efficiency by up to 30%, freeing capacity for new services like ATSC mobile DTV. The company will also debut and demonstrate its end-to-end ATSC M/H ecosystem solution featuring mobile encoding technology from Envivio and M/H multiplexing from Axcera, which will both be integrated with Ericsson’s existing nCompass Control (nCC) system.

“As television audiences evolve, consumers are seeking more services on different devices to access content wherever they are and at whatever time,” says Lisa Hobbs, Head of Broadcast Compression Solutions, Solution Area TV, Ericsson. “For broadcasters seeking to provide such services in limited bandwidth, the need to improve the efficiency of MPEG-2 coding in ATSC networks has never been greater. “By making essential bandwidth savings, broadcasters in ATSC regions can provide consumers with extra HD channels and/or mobile DTV, presenting a greater quality and value of service. The new Ericsson ATSC products and solutions will help broadcasters capitalize on these new services to grow the terrestrial broadcasting market today, and tomorrow.”
