T-VIPS Continues to Advance JPEG2000 Capabilities

T-VIPS is looking to give broadcasters and content creators a chance to move into JPEG2000 compression for video transport without having to commit to SD, HD, 3D, and 3G with the TVG450 next generation video transport system. “Even if the customer isn’t going 3G today it will help with SD and HD material and that, to us, is a very cool advantage,” says Johnny Dolvik, CEO of T-VIPS.

The T-VIPS TVG450 is the industry’s first JPEG2000 video gateway, based on the latest advances in JPEG2000 compression and IP networking and supporting SD, HD, 3G HD (1080p) and 3D contribution over IP transport networks. It allows six HD channels in 1 RU, complementing the compact half-width 1 RU and the full 1 RU dual power solutions.

JPEG2000 continues to gain attention as an alternative to MPEG2 and it is no surprise the T-VIPS, a company committed to JPEG2000, praises the standard.

“There is less delay when using JPEG2000 instead of MPEG2 and it has 10 bit architecture instead of 8 bit and also doesn’t use macroblocking,” says Dolvik. “That means there is no noise and frame-by-frame delivery means error resiliency.”

And plenty of sports-related clients agree. Turner Sports relies on JPEG2000 and All Mobile Video’s new 3D production truck system includes T-VIPS gear. Also Austrian broadcaster ORS will use the CP560 DVB-T2 Gateway as a central point of control for the DVB-T2 network for delivery of World Cup coverage to viewers.

Up next for T-VIPS? The move towards lossless compression, something Dolvik says the company will offer for HD sometime in the next year.
