Stanley Cup Playoffs Score Huge Ratings for Comcast RSNs

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic scored the highest-rated Washington Capitals game in network history on April 28 during the team’s Game 7 loss to Montreal Canadiens. The game delivered an 81 average household rating in the Washington market, surpassing the previous record (a 5.8 earned on Feb. 8, 2010 at Montreal) by 40% and the previous playoff record (a 5.6 in Game 6) by 45%. During Game 7, CSN Mid-Atlantic was the most-watched television station in the Washington market.

The Capitals 2-1 loss eliminated the team from this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, but it caps off the highest rated playoff series ever on CSN Mid-Atlantic. For CSN Mid-Atlantic’s coverage of the 2010 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, the network earned an average household rating of 5.3 in the Washington market, surpassing the 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinals (4.7) as the most-viewed Capitals playoff series in network history by 13 percent. The 5.3 average rating for the seven-game series represents a 77 percent increase over last year’s first-round series against the NY Rangers (3.0).

The success of CSN Mid-Atlantic reflects the bigger picture for Comcast RSNs, which has enjoyed huge ratings for this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. The conference quarterfinal ratings across the four Comcast RSNs with NHL playoff teams are up 30% over last season. The average first-round playoffs audience for CSN Mid-Atlantic, CSN California (San Jose Sharks), CSN Chicago (Blackhawks), and CSN Philadelphia (Flyers) was 635,520 households.
