Korean Telcom Installs Miranda Automatic Loudness Control for IPTV Service

Miranda Technologies has announced that Mega TV, Korea Telecom’s IPTV service, has installed Automatic Loudness Control to provide real-time loudness measurement and adjustment on-the-fly. The system can prevent excessive channel-to-channel and segment-to-segment loudness, such as during commercial breaks.

Korea Telecom (KT) has installed 42 DensitĂ© XVP-3901 3Gbps/HD/SD signal processing cards equipped with Automatic Loudness Control (ALC), using Miranda’s wideband loudness processing. The installation was performed by Namsung Trading, Miranda’s Korean distributor.

“With our new ALC system, our viewers are no longer troubled by excessive loudness during commercial breaks and as they change channels”, says Gil-Jae OH, Manager of Korea Telecom’s Broadcast Operation Team. “Instead, they can enjoy much more consistent audio at the level that best suits them. The audio sounds completely natural, with the ALC processing preserving the character of the original content. This system is very space-efficient, and offers many highly integrated functions. For instance, the loudness control cards also perform HD processing, which makes them ideal for when we upgrade more of our channels to high definition later this year.”

KT has configured the ALC solution in a set-and-forget mode. This involves setting a Target Loudness per program, which is maintained by the processors without any further operator intervention. A range of processing profiles are available which adapt the processing to best suit different styles of programming, such as vocals or music.
