Wazoo Sports Network To Offer OVC Game of the Week

Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) football will be a centerpiece of this fall’s programming on the Wazoo Sports Network. The network, which launched its 24/7 sports service less than a year ago, has announced a 10-game schedule featuring the OVC Game of the Week.

Although Wazoo aired a number of individual games during last fall’s football season, VP of Business Development Jeff Sheppard calls the OVC agreement a big step for the young enterprise: “It’s the first time broadcasting a complete schedule.”

The Wazoo Network was born in 2007 as an online service covering sports in Kentucky. In September 2009, the television network was launched and now reaches 650,000 households in Kentucky and has partnerships with TV stations in the state as well as in Alabama, Tennessee, and Illinois.

In addition to the OVC football coverage, the network provides extensive coverage of the current Kentucky Little League Championships and minor-league baseball teams the Lexington Legends and Louisville Bats. A 28-game high school football schedule has also been announced for the fall, covering games on Thursday and Friday nights.

The Wazoo Network fields a multicamera SD truck to cover its sporting events, using three or four cameras crewed by staffers, freelancers, and college students.

The network grew out of co-founder/EVP of Operations Gregg Harper’s activities in support of his son’s high school football program, for which he created a Website featuring live broadcasts of games. Co-founder/President Doc Carpenter brought business and venture-capital experience to the endeavor, and the Wazoo Sports Network was born.

Although the network’s coverage has been specific to the state of Kentucky to date, the OVC schedule — which includes colleges in five states — is an important step in the network’s plans to expand beyond the Kentucky borders.
