EchoStar To Break Ground on New Data Center in Cheyenne
EchoStar Broadcasting Corp., a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp., has announced plans to build a Tier III, 77,000-square-foot data center in Cheyenne, WY. The multimillion-dollar data center will be located adjacent to EchoStar’s existing satellite uplink and broadcast facility, which is located in the Cheyenne Business Park just east of Cheyenne along Interstate 80. The new data center is expected to be completed by end of 2011.
“After visiting and reviewing more than 50 sites across the country, we chose Cheyenne due to our strong ties to the community, a business friendly tax environment, reasonably priced power, and the availability of a professional work force,” says Jeff McSchooler, SVP of EchoStar Broadcasting Corp.
EchoStar, which designs products and delivers television services for satellite, IPTV, cable, terrestrial, and consumer electronics markets worldwide, will use the data center for supercomputing, data storage and archiving to support the company’s growth and for collocation to third party customers, including DISH Network. Collocation space will feature advanced power and cooling as well as high-density rack-mount solutions.
The data center will initially add about a dozen new IT professional positions. EchoStar employs more than 360 in Cheyenne at the 24/7 broadcast center, one of the largest providers of video channels in the world, and it provides telemetry and control for more than a dozen satellites. It was built in 1994 to support the launch of DISH Network, and today delivers uplink services for a variety of commercial and government customers.
“We are pleased that EchoStar has chosen to expand its presence in the Cheyenne community, and we are delighted that EchoStar continues to invest in Cheyenne and in the State of Wyoming,” says Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen. “EchoStar has been a shining example of economic development in Cheyenne and our state. They have created hundreds of jobs in the last 16 years. We’re excited that EchoStar is again helping to grow Wyoming’s emerging technology portfolio. EchoStar has been an excellent neighbor in Cheyenne and we look forward to the construction of their new data center that will begin later this summer.”
