Daktronics Upgrades George Washington University Athletics Center

A new integrated video, scoring, and advertising system for George Washington University athletics and events is set to be installed this summer as part of the ongoing transformation of the Charles E. Smith Center. The system, designed, manufactured, and installed by Daktronics is among the continued upgrades to the facility, which has served as the home for GW athletics for more than 30 years.

“This upgrade will provide a state-of-the-art experience to George Washington athletics at the Smith Center,” says Athletic Director Jack Kvancz. “The flexibility of live video with sponsor messages and stat information provides even greater value to our fans and corporate partners.”

The new system will include a center-hung installation consisting of LED video displays. The displays, which feature 10mm pixel spacing ideal for indoor sports and advertising, each measure approximately 10-feet high by 17-feet wide. They will be capable of showing live video and instant replays, animations, graphics, and advertisements.

“What makes GW’s install unique is the size of the display, which will be among the largest in college basketball,” says Arthur Portnoy of Daktronics Sales. “Once installed, GW will have the largest collegiate Daktronics 10 millimeter basketball displays in the mid-Atlantic region.”

Five digital scorer’s tables are included in the integrated system as well. These court-level displays will measure more than 3-feet high by 9-feet wide each, or approximately 45 feet total. They will be able to show game information and sponsor messages to the crowd during games.

Two 51-foot-long ribbon display and other fascia displays, all featuring 16mm pixel spacing, will showcase sponsors and provide messages to fans.

Also included in the project is the new Show Control System. The Daktronics video processing system processes and scales live and recorded video signal to digital imagery on large displays. The system provides combination of control software, data integration and playback hardware in a single production solution.

“The other unique feature is that GW will be one of the first collegiate teams to utilize the Show Control system,” Portnoy says. “This cutting edge control room technology will put GW in the same league as some of our latest installs at the professional level.”
