IBC 2010: Rimage Demos Blu-ray Archiving Capabilities Using Panasonic 3D Camcorder

As the success of 3D in the world of AV media continues to grow, Rimage Europe demonstrated live archiving of 3D video footage in HD on Blu-ray Discs at its booth at IBC 2010. Rimage combined its hardware and software with the world´s first fully integrated FULL-HD 3D camcorder – the Panasonic AG-3DA1.

Visitors to Rimage’s booth got the opportunity able to experience the first fully integrated FULL-HD 3D camcorder working with Rimage digital publishing systems. Visitors to the Rimage booth could film themselves with the AG-3DA1 in FULL-HD 3D. The integrated double-lens FULL-HD 3D camcorder allows the recording of FULL-HD 3D videos on SDHC/SD-memory cards. The 3D footage gets stored directly on a Blu-ray Disc that gets an individual and fully coloured high-quality imprint.

In addition to demonstrating automated 3D Blu-ray authoring of digital content, Rimage showcased several manual-authoring solutions, which perform long-term archiving of raw data.  Furthermore, Rimage demonstrated how digital footage can be easily integrated in existing content management systems with watchfolders or the Rimage software development kit (SDK). If needed, watermarking and copy protection can be added to the stored data.

“Everybody is talking about 3D, especially after experiencing it at the movies,” said Jürgen Sattelmayer, Vertical Business Manager EMEA at Rimage, at IBC. “At IBC we offer the opportunity to experience 3D directly. The visitors to our booth will not only have the chance to see the world´s first fully integrated FULL-HD 3D camcorder, they will also be able to learn how data that is created during a 3D production gets processed, archived and published quickly and easily. Without a shadow of a doubt, 3D is one of the dominating trends in the AV/broadcast industry. The technology requires user-friendly solutions to spread even further. One way to strengthen the success of 3D is to seamlessly combine professional optical media writers, powerful software and long lasting Blu-ray Discs. We showcase this triad at IBC.”

At IBC 2010, Rimage also showcased its latest solutions for data archiving and NLE post production on Blu-ray discs.

Rimage, supported by Como Computers & Motion, showcased brand new media archiving workflow solutions. With these solutions video files on P2, SxS, RED and SDHC-cards can be stored securely for archiving and NLE post production on Blu-ray discs, including customized metadata and proxy preview clips.

The solutions are a combination of Como´s ProxSys media archiving solution and the Blu-ray Disc publishing systems from Rimage. This special configuration of hardware and software especially addresses users of P2, SxS, Sony Professional Disc, Focus FS DTE and similar storage media that have to be read out and stored quickly. In addition, the solutions add individual metadata to the files so the footage can be found quickly in any content management system. To ease search even further, the system automatically creates and stores a Flash preview file whilst storing the data on Blu-ray Discs. The user can then search via web browser within a network and access the preview files quickly. As soon as the user has found the right file, it can be read and edited as a high-resolution file from the Blu-ray Disc.

“Within the last few years the prices for optical storage media have dropped dramatically,” said Jürgen Sattelmayer, Vertical Business Manager EMEA at Rimage, at IBC. Especially in the area of Blu-ray Discs the costs per terabyte storage space have dropped from 800 Euros to approximately 100 Euros today. The growing popularity of Blu-ray Discs amongst consumers will help reduce the costs even further. n addition, more and more professionals are starting to realize the weaknesses of traditional media such as hard drives. For them Blu-ray Discs – which now come with a reliable archiving guarantee of up to 50 years – become an attractive alternative. The market is demanding solutions that allow storage to and recall from Blu-ray Discs quickly and easily. In particular,  the growing number of freelance camera teams that have to store footage quickly with low costs benefit from this development.”
