XOS Digital Keeps SEC Fans Connected With Conference-Wide Mobile App

The Southeastern Conference is competitive across multiple sports, and fans of a single team often have a vested interest in what else happens around the conference. To keep those fans connected, no matter what sport or school piques their interest, XOS Digital has released the official 2010-11 SEC mobile application for iPhone and Android, with Blackberry and iPad versions slated to roll out later this month.

The SEC Mobile app, available through the SEC Digital Network for $4.99, features live game stats and scores for every sport, daily original SEC programming produced by the SEC Digital Network, and — the biggest draw for the app — narrated video highlights for football and basketball, available within an hour of the end of each game.

“The best feature of the app is the video quality,” says Ben Goodwin, GM of the SEC Digital Network for XOS Digital. “I don’t know that you’ll find better video quality anywhere. Our engineers spent a lot of time during the off-season maximizing our efforts to provide the best video quality, and then we put a strong emphasis on the amount of video we have available.”

Throughout football and basketball season, editors at XOS’s SEC Digital Network office in Orlando cut highlights during each game, adding narration as they go. Once the final whistle blows, the talent voices the final wrap-up, the editor adds in the last few plays, and the highlight reel is updated for fans to view.

“We want SEC fans, no matter where they’re located, to be able to follow everything happening in the conference,” Goodwin says. “If you’re a fan tailgating in Gainesville [, FL], you want to know everything going on in Columbia at the South Carolina game. Minutes after the game’s over, you’ll now be able to watch highlights of what just happened, and that’s our mission: to distribute the content and allow fans to follow the league no matter where they are, even if they’re not in the conference footprint or if they’re actually attending a game.”

Original content for the mobile app is also produced daily out of the Orlando headquarters, including matchup previews, historic features on rivalries, and the SEC Women’s Report.

“We have our own talent and editors in our studios in Orlando,” Godwin says. “That’s where our libraries of both historic and current HD content are housed, so that’s a huge resource in making this an efficient process and giving us the ability to turn around highlights very quickly.”

The app also offers live stats, schedules, and scores for all conference-sponsored sports, not just the revenue-generating ones.

“Several of our schools have given us strong feedback in that arena,” Godwin says. “We want to provide as much coverage across all sports as possible. The huge value in the app is that, beginning in September with football, soccer, and volleyball, all the way through baseball and softball in May, you can cover everything happening in the conference on one app.”

Although XOS Digital does occasionally negotiate deals with individual schools, this app is designed to be conference-wide, and the company chose to develop a conference-branded application rather than individual school-specific apps.
