College Venue News: Grand Valley State To Spend $8.3M on Club Team Facilities

Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, will spend $8.3 million for new athletic fields with a mixture of artificial turf and natural grass, largely to meet the needs of expanding club sports. The plan also calls for a new outdoor track, replacing one at Lubbers Stadium that, for years, has been unsuitable for competition. Basically, we have eight courts to serve 20,000 students and faculty and both tennis teams. It is the smallest amount of tennis courts for any major university”…

…What’s a tenth of a second, really? Sometimes, nothing. But college basketball is all about these little moments. After implementing changes at the Division I level in the past few seasons, the NCAA continues to tweak its backboard and scoreboard lighting with LED technology and implement new timing mechanisms for Division II and III basketball to add precision to the sport. Starting with the 2010-11 season, the NCAA requires teams to place a red light behind each backboard or LED lights around the backboard. Teams also will be required to implement a timing system that counts off tenths of a second on the game clock.
