Philadelphia PBS Station Utilizes Broadcast Pix’s Fluent Rapid CG for Election Coverage

WHYY-TV, the PBS member station serving Philadelphia, used the new Fluent Rapid CG option with its Broadcast Pix Slate 5000 video production system last week for its coverage of live election results. With Rapid CG, the station was able to automatically and seamlessly integrate the AP News Wire feed into its on-air graphics, which provided up-to-the-minute results for several significant political races in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

John Doran, WHYY chief engineer, said the use of Fluent Rapid CG helped speed up the process of posting results while maintaining accuracy. Because WHYY personnel did not have to manually input the information from the feed into the CG, the station was able to avoid typing errors and other delays.

“With Rapid CG, we were able to efficiently handle the AP News Wire feed and automatically update results,” says Doran. “As a public broadcaster, we’ve never been able to do that before, because systems in the past were too expensive.”

Patrick Warner, who served as technical director for the station’s election night coverage, said Fluent Rapid CG was easy to use and helped his workflow. “It was just like putting in another lower-third,” he says.

Introduced last month, the Fluent Rapid CG option for Granite and Slate video production systems streamlines the creation of data-intensive CG graphics by automatically integrating databases, RSS feeds, and custom actions like scorekeeping into templates. The result is customized graphics with significantly less manual effort. It is ideal for live productions that feature graphics that change throughout the show, including election results and sports coverage.
