LMC Camaeleon Cam Packs Full HD Into Small Camera

Ultra slow motion system developer LMC has produced what it claims will be the smallest full high-definition CCD camera on the market. The Camaeleon Cam is aimed squarely at the sports broadcast market and will be launched officially just before Christmas.

The unit has a 2.3-inch CCD 14-bit sensor, with a dynamic range of 64dB. This allows the Camaeleon to produce uncompressed HD pictures that are carried from the camera using either intelligent fibre or wireless connections.

A range of lenses can be accommodated by the C-mounting fitted as standard. A PL-mount is offered as an option, with possibilities for adapting the camera to take a B4 housing. Pixel size is 5.5µm by 5.5µm, with a total number of 2004 x 1144 pixels (1920 x 1080 active).

The camera and CCU are housed in the same unit, which measures 44x44x53mm and, according to LMC’s publicity, is smaller than a Rubik’s Cube. In addition to its box-like housing Camaeleon can be mounted in adjustable waterproof, heated and rugged housings.

LMC Chief Executive Felix Margraff says the main selling point of Camaeleon is that it “adapts” to different environments, hence the name. For example a unit being used for a golf tournament will have a grass cover, while motor sports units will blend in with the tarmac.

“We are planning an underwater version, which could be used ideally for all kinds of water sports, like rowing, which would have a wireless unit on a boat, or platform diving, with Camaeleon mounted on a rail going into the water,” comments Margraff.

LMC plans to rent, lease and sell Camaeleon through its international sales network. Prices have not been confirmed yet but will be announced nearer the launch time.

A second generation version of LMC’s flagship product, the Antelope ultra slow motion camera system, is due early next year and will be shown at NAB 2011. Antelope MkII will feature a new sensor and a different design of RCP and OCP, both of which will be on serial RS connections.

Margraff says Antelope MkII will be an ENG-style system that can be handheld or mounted on a rail, Steadicam or crane. With a smaller, lighter body the camera will also come in a wireless version.

LMC will rent out Antelope MkII direct but it will also be for sale through the company’s network of distributors.
