Plazamedia Turns European Heavyweight Title Fight Into 3D Event

On Saturday Dec. 4, Plazamedia will produce the European Heavyweight title fight between Alexander Dimitrenko and Albert Sosnowski in 3D. The fight will serve as the title card of the Universum boxing evening from the Sport and Congress Hall in Schwerin, Germany. Plazamedia will produce the entire evening of boxing in 3D, HD, and SD.

Plazamedia will deploy a total of 20 cameras (10 3D rigs), including such specialized camera systems as a 3D SportsCam, a 3D Steadycam, and two 3D ultra-light cranes right on the ring. In addition, two main cameras will provide the 3D overview.

In addition to the 3D cameras, Plazamedia will use two handheld cameras, two goal cams for the changing rooms, two studio cameras, and two additional main cameras. A crew of 60 will be on hand at the arena in Schwerin.

The company will produce the program in parallel in 3D and 2D, with signal distribution via optical fibre 1080i/50 side-by-side as well as via satellite. The 3D and 2D transmissions will be implemented independently.

Sports channel Sport1 will be in charge of editing the live broadcast.

“With the complex, high-tech production of this boxing evening in 3D and HD, Plazamedia is confirming its innovative strength with regard to implementing new production technologies,” says Plazamedia CEO Florian Nowosad. “Having produced the opening match of the ice-hockey world championships in 3D this year, this is a further step towards the establishment of 3D in sports broadcasting. Next year, we will continue our intensive pursuit of 3D in sports production and present further highlights in production technology.”

The 3D-HD production is a collaboration between Sport1, Deutsche Teleko, and HD+.

Plazamedia will also produce the coverage for Polish pay-TV operator “n” (the HD-DTH platform of the TVN group) in 3D and HD. The 3D broadcast on nShow 3D will mark the launch of Poland’s first regular 3D channel. “n” will also televise the fights in HD on nSport. The “n” segment will be produced with extra cameras, different positions, and a separate transmission circuit.

For Sport1 and pay-TV channel Sport1+, Plazamedia will produce the action simultaneously in SD or HD.
