Venue News: Goodell Meets with Minn. Governor

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will be in Minnesota on Monday, and not just to see the big game between the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears played on an icy college football field. Goodell will meet privately with Gov.-elect Mark Dayton and legislative leaders over the Vikings’ stalled drive for a new, publicly subsidized stadium to replace the aging Metrodome. Goodell’s meeting with Dayton was scheduled before the Metrodome’s inflatable roof collapsed a week ago, but more evidence emerged last week that the team is trying to use the roof collapse to rally support for a new stadium…

…Michigan Stadium renovations are complete and work at Crisler Arena is underway. But improvements at the Michigan athletic department’s two biggest venues aren’t stopping there. Last week, Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said the department could ask the university’s Regents to approve high definition scoreboards at Michigan Stadium and Phase 2 of the Crisler Arena project at their January meeting. Mark Snyder reported that Brandon has been evaluating scoreboards on each of his stadium stops and he said what ends up at Michigan Stadium will be “spectacular…”

…The New Jersey Nets have unveiled their blueprint for NBA domination — starting with ambitious plans for a new all-purpose $500 million super stadium. The team is moving to Brooklyn where their new Barclays Center arena is being built in time for the 2012-13 season. It will be the first time a major sports team has been based in the borough since 1957, after the Dodgers baseball side moved to Los Angeles. The Nets’ move to Brooklyn forms part of a total overhaul following their takover by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov…

…At Arlington City Hall, speculation on when Jerry Jones will announce a stadium naming-rights deal is more than just water-cooler chatter. Arlington stands to collect millions when a corporate benefactor steps forward for the Cowboys’ home base showplace. “The agreement with the team, back from day one, included a naming-rights provision where the city would get up to 5 percent of the annual [payment from the sponsor], up to $500,000 a year,” said Trey Yelverton, Arlington’s deputy city manager.
