SVG Year in Review: June

SVG did plenty of jet setting in June, beginning with coverage of the renewed rivalry matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, both on television and online.

For the second-annual College Sports Video Summit, SVG then headed south to Atlanta, where NCAA SVP Greg Shaheen kicked off the two-day Summit with a keynote discussing finding opportunity amidst chaos. Over the next two days, conference discussion topics ranged from conference-specific networks to staffing, the art of economical video production, and what’s next in the world of college sports video.

Industry legend Harvey Schiller opened the presentation of the annual College Sports Media Awards with a rousing keynote address, after which each of the 2010 CSMA winners took the stage to share tips and techniques from their winning videos.

From Atlanta it was off to South Africa, where Ken Kerschbaumer covered every angle of the international production, from the gear used and sound infrastructure involved to ESPN’s expanded on-site operations, innovations from the emerging technologies group, and the launch of ESPN 3D. SVG checked in with World Cup directors, venues, the 3D production team, and even acoustics experts on how to tame the vuvuzela, and was able to provide some post-event perspective, including answers to plenty of frequently asked questions.

On the way home from South Africa, Ken K. made a quick detour to England to cover the Wimbledon tournament, where NBC Sports took a traditional approach to its coverage. SVG offered perspective from the broadcast center, the ESPN ITV team, and checked in with the BBC to capture its focus throughout the tournament.
