CES 2011: SENSIO Launches Trio of 3D Technologies

At CES 2011, SENSIO Technologies has launched the SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D-encoded VOD library. The new library of 3D content has been built up by SENSIO since it first started to aggregate content in 2003.

SENSIO has negotiated the rights to a varied library including independent movies, documentaries, and major film releases, which it will encode in the SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D format, to be distributed through the RoxioNow over-the-top VOD platform. Manufacturers of Internet-connected devices incorporating the SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D decoder will be able to offer privileged access this library of 3D content to their customers. These devices include 3D-connected TVs, starting with Vizio’s XVT range, as well as Blu-ray Disc players and PCs.

SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D is a frame-compatible technology for high-fidelity stereoscopic signal processing that is easily integrated into display products. Developed by SENSIO for more than a decade, and deployed in the field for seven years, this technology has been utilized for live 3D events in cinemas around the world, as well as for high-profile console games and DVD movies. According to SENSIO, the Hi-Fi 3D system delivers “visually lossless” 3D images that are faithful to the original images, making the difference imperceptible to the eye of the viewer.

SENSIO S2D Switch Provides 2D-3D Flexibility
SENSIO has also unveiled the SENSIO S2D Switch, a feature that enables a spatially-compressed 3D video stream to be displayed in 2D (left- or right-eye). The SENSIO S2D Switch gives consumers 2D-3D viewing flexibility.

If a consumer invests in a 3D movie via VOD or records content from a subscribed 3D channel on a DVR, the SENSIO S2D Switch allows that content to be viewed in either 3D or in 2D. If there are not enough 3D glasses for everyone watching the content, the SENSIO S2D Switch allows the entire group to watch the 3D content in HD 2D.

SENSIO Autodetect Simplifies 3D Experience for Consumers
Also at CES 2011, SENSIO has introduced SENSIO Autodetect, a 3D-minded feature that automatically detects the input format, whether 2D, side-by-side, SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D, or Top-and-Bottom, and displays images in the corresponding output format. Autodetect is designed for integration into audio/video receivers, set-top boxes, 3DTVs, and Blu-ray players, as well as professional video-processing equipment.

Devices not equipped with SENSIO Autodetect require consumers to know which input format has been used for a given 3D movie, broadcast, PPV, or VOD purchase. Users must navigate through on-screen menus and select the appropriate output format before they can view 3D content. SENSIO Autodetect eliminates this confusion, enabling consumers to easily view 3D content.
