SANTA ANA, Calif., Jan 04, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) —

SRS Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ: SRSL | PowerRating), officially recognized as one of America’s Greatest Brands and the industry leader in surround sound, audio and voice technologies, today announced the successful completion and operation of its state-of-the-art Advanced Rendering Lab (ARL), which has been exclusively designed and constructed to accelerate research and development of object-oriented multi-dimensional audio technologies beyond the existing channel-based alternatives. The ARL provides SRS’ R&D team with an unmatched ability to effectively design, experiment, innovate, test and develop new audio rendering ideas and techniques in a fraction of the time expected compared to traditional sound development and mixing facilities.

“The ARL is literally an audiophile’s dream come true!” said Alan Kraemer, Chief Technology Officer for SRS Labs. “The lab is truly a 21st century research facility where, with the click of a few buttons connected to a powerful software driven system, we can hear our ideas come to life instantaneously and rapidly refine them on the fly. I am confident that the technologies that we’re developing in this lab will change the audio industry as we know it.”

Steeped in tradition, the new lab revives SRS’ rich history of pioneering audio research and development dating back to the days when SRS was part of the legendary Hughes Aircraft. Inside the acoustically optimized ARL, a full truss and scaffolding cage allows SRS engineers to place any number of speakers virtually anywhere within the room. Currently equipped with 20 self-powered studio monitors and two powered subwoofers, the lab could ultimately accommodate hundreds of speakers to empower the R&D team with the ability to compare their concepts against any existing, channel-based audio configuration. All signal routing and processing is performed using a custom designed computer system equipped with a unique, highly versatile audio development software system, and are routed to the powered monitors via 12-channel professional audio interfaces. This innovative set-up allows various configurations and algorithms to be instantly compared without having to deal with any cables or patchbays.

The ARL is expected to be an key tool in SRS’ quest to invent the next generation of audio technology that will significantly outperform existing state-of-the-art channel-based systems, not just by providing better surround audio and depth but by allowing content creators and sound engineers to pinpoint exactly where they want the sound to be within the 3D space of a room, a theater, a concert hall or any other conceivable space. ARL is already proven to be a significant tool in developing new, vector-based amplitude panning solutions and experimentation with object-oriented sound positioning techniques.

During the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), SRS Labs has constructed a “mini-ARL” room for demonstration purposes. Members of the press with interest in experiencing the future of multi-dimensional audio first-hand are invited to contact SRS PR at [email protected] for an appointment.
