Venue News: L.A. Stadium Backers Close In on Naming Rights

Backers of an NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles are close to completing a primary naming-rights deal with Farmers Insurance, sources familiar with the negotiations told the Los Angeles Times. The sources, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak on behalf of the project, said AEG was originally hoping for a 30-year deal starting at $20 million a year, with annual increases as part of the agreement. …The Cotton Bowl is always a big game, and, this year, it also served as a test run for the biggest football game of all. …The March 26 exhibition soccer game between Argentina and the U.S. will likely be held at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press. ESPN2 has set aside a time slot for the match starting at 7 p.m. ET…

…If a deal between Hamilton County, OH, and Cincinnati’s professional sports teams — which calls for the teams to contribute nearly $10 million to the stadiums’ costs — doesn’t go through, the fund that pays for them will be nearly $1 million in the red at the end of 2012. That could mean cuts to other county services, dipping into reserves, or getting more money from county taxpayers. If just the Bengals deal — which calls for the team to give the county $7.4 million over the next five years — falls apart, the fund will be left with just $86,000 at the end of 2012.
