Sports To Be a Focus at UK Symposium on Audio for Video

Surround sound for TV sports coverage will be a featured subject during a one-day symposium titled Audio for Visuals to be held on Feb. 5 by the AES UK Section. Ian Rosam of Video Sound Services will present the session, with the keynote speech by Tim Carroll, president/chief executive of Linear Acoustic.

The event has been organised to give an overview of what’s happening in the audio industry today, according to symposium Chairman Bill Foster. “The business is very diverse now,” he says, “and we want to attract both people who are already working in one area of sound, and might be thinking of broadening their horizons, and students who are hoping to get into this sector.”

Foster considers Rosam an ideal person to speak about surround for sport because of his wide experience, including working on Sky’s Premier League football coverage. Rosam began his TV career in 1973 at BBC Cardiff. He later worked for UK commercial broadcasters Thames, Anglia, and Television South (TVS). After TVS lost its franchise in 1992, he founded Video Sound Services with Robert Edwards, the pair acting as both sound supervisors and consultants.

Rosam has mixed Sky’s Premier League broadcasts since 1992, in the process making the transition from mono to 5.1 surround sound. He and Edwards were involved with the FIFA World Cup in 2002, 2006, and 2010; Euro 2008; the Beijing Olympics; and the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010.

The symposium will take place in the digital cinema at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, UK. The venue is equipped with a 5.1-surround-sound system and 2k digital projector.

Other sessions and speakers on the schedule: Live Events for TV and Cinema, with Toby Alington of Richmond Studios, whose credits include last year’s World Cup Kickoff concert in Soweto, South Africa; Preserving the Archive, by Richard Yeoman-Clark of the British Film Institute; and Audio-Video Synchronization by Rowan de Pomerai of BBC R&D.
