Ratings Roundup: NBA All-Star Game Draws Largest Audience of Post-Jordan Era

The 2011 NBA All-Star Game on TNT was the most watched and highest rated All-Star Game since 2003, when Michael Jordan made his final appearance. The game delivered 9.1 million total viewers (up 33% from 2010) and a 5.2 U.S. rating (up 37% from 2010), according to Nielsen Fast Nationals. In addition TNT’s coverage of NBA All-Star Saturday Night was the most watched in the event’s 26 year history. The event delivered 8.1 million total viewers (up 49% from 2010) and a 4.4 U.S. rating (up 42% from 2010).

Fox Sports’ coverage of the Daytona 500 was the most-watched NASCAR race since 2008, pulling in an average of 15.6 million viewers, up 17% from last year. The race earned an 8.7 rating, up 13% over last year (7.7). Nine of the top 10 metered markets saw double-digit increases from last year.

NBC’s Hockey Day in America on Sunday produced solid ratings as the 12:30 PM ET regional window (Philadelphia/NY Rangers, Minnesota/Detroit and Washington/Buffalo) and the 3:30 PM ET national Game of the Week featuring Pittsburgh vs. Chicago drew a 1.2 in the overnights, both season highs for NBC’s coverage of hockey, aside from the Winter Classic. The windows are up 25% from last week’s 12:30 PM ET broadcast of Boston/Detroit, which drew an 0.9 overnight. Through six telecasts (on five dates) The NHL On NBC is averaging a 1.3 overnight rating.
