Grass Valley Unveils New K2 Products

Grass Valley recently released several new K2 media server and K2 storage products. New products in all three new classes of storage—Online, Production, and Nearline—allow a Grass Valley K2 system to be configured and tailored for specific business needs and budgets. The new lower-cost offerings enable users to configure systems to their individual requirements, with fewer components, less complexity, less rack space, and benefitting from higher performance and reliability.

According to Grass Valley, the new series of K2 servers and K2 storage offerings provide a 25-50% increase in system bandwidth over similar K2 Lx0 storage configurations; 10 times the number of client connections supported by a single K2 iSCSI server; a third level of Quality of Service (QoS) providing dedicated system bandwidth for time-critical production editing activities; 20-40% reduction in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO); and increased storage capacities for Production and Nearline storage systems.

“We recognize that virtually all of our customers are moving to file-based workflow and we’re working hard to support this transition and make it available to a wider range of budgets,” says Charlie Dunn, Senior Vice President for Editing, Servers, and Storage for Grass Valley. “This new series is also designed with a modular architecture that allows users to pick the capacity and channel count they need without having to purchase features they don’t.”

New product technologies that support these capabilities include: a new RAID controller with an 8 Gb Fibre Channel interface (doubling the interface speed of current Lx0 controllers); a new 10 Gb iSCSI port in the K2 server (10x the density of current Lx0 servers); a new 2 TB capacity 7.2K RPM SAS drives for Production and Nearline storage systems (twice the capacity currently available); new 6 Gb/s SAS (serial attached SCSI) drives providing increased performance realized through the new RAID controller; and K2 media servers with a 64-bit operating system to support increased system performance and storage capacities.
