ESPN Networks, ABC Lead Pack with 52 Sports Emmy Nominations

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences unveiled the nominees for the 32nd Annual Sports Emmy Awards on Tuesday, as the ESPN Networks and ABC topped all broadcasters with 52 nods (including 36 for ESPN, 13 for ABC, and 12 for ESPN’s other networks and broadband offerings). HBO came in second with 22 nominations followed by NBC with 20 (plus an additional four for its digital properties and one for USA Network), CBS with 17 (CBS Interactive received one additional nomination), and FOX with 12.

More than 150 nominees were announced in 33 categories including outstanding live sports special, live series, sports documentary, studio show, promotional announcements, play-by-play personality and studio analyst. In addition, this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports will go to the legendary sports broadcaster, Al Michaels.

ESPN’s 2010 FIFA World Cup coverage garnered 12 nods, while NBC’s Olympic Winter Games brought in six. ESPN’s E:60, CBS’s Super Bowl XLIV coverage earned six apiece, while HBO’s Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the New York Jets and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel each received four nominations, respectively.

The Awards will be given out at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center located in the Time Warner Center on May 2 in New York City.
