Chyron Sees Blue Skies Ahead With New Graphics Platform

The word Blue was ubiquitous at Chyron’s NAB press conference Sunday morning, whether it was the new “Think Blue” marketing campaign, the six Blue demonstration pods at its booth, or its newly branded BlueNet end-to-end graphics workflow. However, the company has little reason to “feel blue,” flaunting a markedly optimistic outlook for 2011.

“We’re in the best shape that I’ve seen in the 16 years that I’ve been with Chyron,” says CEO Michael Wellesley-Wesley. “I’m expecting 2011 to be substantially better than 2010, which was far better than 2009.”

BlueNet Hits the Ice
Leading Chyron’s 2011 NAB announcements is BlueNet — an end-to-end graphics workflow that combines Chyron’s suite of graphics tools into a single customizable setup. BlueNet streamlines ordering and graphics asset management, collaborative graphics creation, and real-time playout. BlueNet is integrated with AXIS, Chyron’s cloud-based services offering, and can also be integrated into leading newsroom systems, such as AP ENPS, Avid iNEWS, and Dalet.

BlueNet has already been implemented at 13 Sinclair Broadcasting stations in the U.S., as well as at 12 NRK stations in Norway. The big announcement on Saturday, however, was that NHL Network has integrated BlueNet into its operations center and the new graphics workflow will go live this week with the launch of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

BlueNet will support live NHL Network programming, including NHL on the Fly, the network’s signature news and highlights show, and NHL Live!, which films Monday through Friday inside the NHL store in New York City. BlueNet streamlines the creation of on-air graphics for the NHL Network and provides both its U.S. and Canadian sites with access to those graphics.

Within its BlueNet workflow, the NHL Network is using four HyperX3 on-air graphics systems and a Chyron CAMIO server in New York allows staff to share graphics and create rundowns for live programming. In Toronto, two HyperX3 systems are installed in the control room and in the coming months will be integrated with iNEWS. In New York, Chyron’s iRB (Intelligent Rundown Builder) allows staff to create rundowns in a MOS environment without the need for a local newsroom system.

Other Blue News at NAB
At NAB, Chyron will also demo enhancements to its HyperX3, LEX3, and MicroX on-air graphics systems. Chyron will also showcase its AXIS, Lyric PRO 8, Quintette Newsroom, and Channel Box² platforms.

According to Chyron, Channel Box2 branding software is on the upswing, with sales up 20% in 2010 over 2009. An update to Chyron’s Channel Box2 software (v.4.1) introduces a playlist sequencer that allows single-traffic-log events to play out multiple Channel Box2 scenes. In addition, Channel Box2 now features automated application of effects between pages. When many pages are being played out back to back, as in the case of school-closing or elections coverage, the operator can simply select the effect in the Channel Box2 system and apply that effect across numerous page transitions with a single click.

Lyric Pro on a Tablet
At its booth, Chyron is also previewing how Lyric PRO software will bring playout control to the iPad and other PC tablets. The tablet user can select and view thumbnails of Lyric messages and display them to air. In the studio, for example, news anchors can use an iPad to select their own templates to put on-air and then use Chyron’s Touch Graph touchscreen graphics feature to manipulate those graphics in real time.
