Quantel Builds Company Image in Software, Formula 1 Racing

Quantel’s 2011 NAB theme is “Exciting Times,” and anyone who is a fan of Formula 1 racing will certainly agree. Quantel is touting its F1-racing sponsorship by parking a race car outside the Las Vegas Convention Center, and CEO Ray Cross expects that car to become the most photographed feature in Las Vegas over the next four days.

In addition to boosting the company’s profile through sponsorships, Cross says Quantel is re-creating its image as a software company. Announcements about the availability of QTube, workflow-over-IP technology, as well as Pablo PA, a software product for postproduction, are helping move Quantel into that software space.

“It’s a bit of a change, perhaps, but we are a software company,” says Steve Owen, director of marketing for Quantel. “The world has changed; we’ve changed. Our tools do not mix what they do with how they do it. The tools are not locked to the hardware, so we can build on what we have today and take advantage of commercial off-the-shelf hardware.”

Specifically relevant to sports is a variety of enhancements that Quantel has announced for its Enterprise sQ server-based production system, including resilience, streamlining playout, new management tools, and deeper system integration.

“There are so many of these systems out there that we’re getting loads of feedback from customers,” Owen explains. “Our R&D team is able to react to that feedback, and we’re able to improve the workflow.”

Improvements include Panasonic AVC-Ultra support for Enterprise sQ and new native Sony XDCAM HD end-to-end workflow.

Says Owen, “There’s a lot of momentum behind Enterprise sQ.”
