New Civolution App Links TV With Tablet or Mobile Device

At the NAB Show, Civolution (Booth SU7917) is demonstrating an interesting second-screen–synchronization application that automatically links a tablet or mobile device with the program being shown on television by identifying the audio coming from the television.

The Second-Screen Synchronization application uses audio wavelength to automatically identify the TV channel being watched and the content being played. Then, it enables precise time-synchronization between content played on TV and the device. The real-time interactivity between the devices, enabled by Civolution’s content-identification technology, automatically handles distribution delays, supports time-shifted viewing, and allows the viewer to interact with the content through the tablet or mobile device.

“It picks up the audio and syncs the content in real time,” says Director of Marketing Emmanuel Josserand. “This gives you the ability to create a variety of applications in terms of sports. While you’re watching the game, you can bet, you can look at fantasy information or stats. There is ad-insertion potential as well.”

In addition, Civolution is demonstrating an Automatic Content Recognition solution used for Internet-connected devices and smart TVs. It simplifies content placement or the triggering of events using the company’s content-identification technologies.

The two products are a marked departure from Civolution’s traditional place as a leader in content protection and watermarking. Though using the company’s same content-identification technology, the products mark one of the first attempts by Civolution to enter the consumer market.

“That is a new step for us,” Josserand says, “and we’re very excited about it. We have the technology to power applications like this for the [consumer market], and we want to take advantage of that.”
