Digital Dish: NBA, NHL First Rounds See Massive Digital Audience

The NBA remains atop the ratings as its playoff coverage continues. NBA Digital delivered record-breaking traffic for the first round of the 2011 NBA Playoffs across online and mobile platforms.

On NBA.com, more than 200 million videos were viewed during first-round play, an increase of 101% from last season’s playoff coverage. Average daily unique visitors were up as well, by 68% from 2010. Meanwhile, the site’s total page views rose 29% from last year and totaled more than 600 million during the first round. NBA GameTime, the mobile application for playoff coverage, saw downloads increase, too: 87% across all platforms from last season.

NHL.com also experienced growth online during its playoffs coverage. In April, NHL.com scored the most unique visitors in any one month in the site’s history, up 32% over April 2010 and 47% over 2010-11 monthly average.

Unique visitors have increased by 25%, while video starts have increased by 57% during the playoffs. In site traffic, the U.S. is up 25%; Canada, up 24% with five of the six markets experiencing double-digit traffic growth; and Finland, the top NHL.com visiting country, is up 36%. Meanwhile, Australia has increased its NHL.com traffic by 36%, too.
