The Switch Taps Snell’s Alchemist Ph.C – HD Converters for 50-City Expansion

The Switch, a North American fiber transmission provider, has purchased two Snell Alchemist Ph.C – HD motion compensated HD standards converters to support a new 50-city expansion plan announced at the 2011 NAB Show. The Snell converters will enable The Switch to provide standards conversion in HD and SD formats, as well as up-, down-, and crossconversion for customers across its new 10Gbps mesh network.

“Snell is the Emmy Award-winning world leader in standards conversion, and the Alchemist Ph.C – HD has been recognized as having the best quality motion compensation technology,” says David Anderson, chief technology officer for The Switch. “With customer applications ranging from Formula 1 racing to football, we believe the Alchemist Ph.C – HD will be a perfect match for our network providing uncompressed 3G, HD-SDI, and SDI fiber transmission.”

According to Snell, the Alchemist Ph.C – HD is the product of extensive research into the exacting demands of HD frame-rate standards conversion, producing converted HD outputs of high quality and clarity that are virtually indistinguishable from the original input. The high-quality output is a result of Snell’s Emmy Award-winning Ph.C motion measurement technology, optimized to prevent the motion-related artifacts that are commonly associated with standards conversion in HD video.

“The Switch has gained its leadership position by consistently providing quality services to the North American broadcast market,” says Jonathan Goldstein, president, Snell Americas. “The company’s selection of the Alchemist Ph.C – HD for its newest transmission network will ensure that the premium content delivered by its customers maintains the highest possible visual quality and value.”
