The Great 3D 'Con': How 2D Viewers Get Poor Picture Quality as Cinemas Use Special Projector Lenses for Normal Films

The UK’s Daily Mail reports that cinemas are routinely using 3D projector lenses for 2D films, resulting in far poorer picture quality, an investigation in Boston has found. Viewers who choose not to pay higher ticket prices for 3D films are being cheated because technicians are failing to remove the special lens when showing normal movies. Such an arrangement can leave films looking up to 85 per cent darker with one director comparing it to ‘daytime versus night-time’.
