Sennheiser Amps Up Youth Football Camp

In search of the next wave of sports broadcasters, audio specialist Sennheiser will provide campers with a new experience at this summer’s Detroit Lions high school football camp. Sennheiser is teaming up with All-Pro NFL lineman Lomas Brown to co-sponsor a free football camp for 150 Detroit children on July 22nd and 23rd. While the program offers all of the normal elements of a football camp, it will also incorporate the opportunity to learn and experience first-hand the ins and outs of sports broadcasting.

Among other football related stations that the children will visit throughout the day, there will be an on-site broadcast booth, hosted by Sennheiser and Dr. Darrius, a radio personality from Detroit radio station WJLB.

“We’re going to have essentially a mini-production set up where you can quickly learn about the different jobs or tasks required to pull off a successful broadcast,” Eric Palonen, Senior Product Specialist for Sennheiser, says of the booth.  “So you have camera, audio-slate, talent and cue cards. And all of these tasks will be filled by someone visiting that station.”

Highlighting some of the equipment Sennheiser will be deploying throughout the booth are MKH 8060 Shotgun Microphones, HMD26 Boomsets, and HD280 Pro Headphones. Sennheiser will also provide each participant with their very own pair of headphones and a certificate of completion of their training session.

Palonen makes clear that this summer’s athletic camp will be adding a dimension that has not been seen before: sports education from the perspective of broadcasting. The experience will provide high school student athletes with a real-world experience and a first-hand glimpse into the world of off-the-field, sports related careers. In a time when finding the right career can seem as challenging as making it to the big leagues, Sennheiser hopes this experience will shed light on a career path that these kids may not have otherwise explored.

”We are a very community-minded organization so we like to give back where possible,” Says Palonen. “Being someone who is both an athlete and involved on the tech side, there’s a world of opportunity that others are just missing.”
