UGA Football Accelerates Video Workflow with Panasonic

In January, Brett Greene came back to college and it proved to be a major step forward.

After nine years in the video department of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, Green joined the Georgia Athletic Association, which had just assigned video acquisition for coaching analysis to four Panasonic AG-HPX370 and two AJ-HPX2000 P2 HD shoulder-mount camcorders.

The new arsenal of cameras teamed up with Georgia’s XOS Thunder System software allows for Greene’s staff to work in high definition at speeds unlike anything he’s worked with, even at the NFL level.

“We were Sony Betacam SX down [in Jacksonville],” said Greene, the football team’s video coordinator. “We were cutting practice via tape and everything was real time. So coming here with this, it’s a huge upgrade.”

During spring practice, the four HPX370s were used in manned 50’ towers for aerial capture of the sideline and end zone action, and the two HPX2000s were used on the ground for individual drills. Greene said, when shooting games in the fall, he intends to utilize the two 2/3” HPX2000s during the game for coaches’ video and the HPX370s for sideline action for motivational videos.

Greene also adds that the efficiency of the Panasonic upgrades will make him and his department more productive than ever.

“I’m only really dropping twice a practice and still getting everything in by the time the coaches are off the field and everything is just moving so much faster,” says Greene. “I can shoot, say, six or seven drills and grab 15 minutes of video and upload it in less than a minute. It’s smokin’.

“Everything we did last year you had to wait until you got home and pop the tapes in,” says Greene. “Now when you get back everything is done. We’re definitely going to be ten times better than we were last year.”

While Greene acquired in DVCPRO50 last spring, all requisite software upgrades were made this summer to support shooting in 1080 in AVC-intra 100.

A Panasonic 103” TH-103PF12U plasma display has been installed in the new video command room in the recently expanded Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, the off-field home of the Georgia Bulldogs. Other Panasonic purchases include an AG-HPG20 Portable recorder, three AJ-PCD2GPJ single slot P2 Drives, more than a dozen P2 cards and four AG-HMR10 handheld AVCCAM HD recorder/players.
