FOR-A Focuses on Sports With Switchers, Frame-Rate Converters

The Sports Video Group is pleased to welcome FOR-A as a corporate sponsor. The company has established an internationally respected brand name associated with innovative products and advanced video and audio technology. FOR-A is a market leader that continuously responds to market demands and keeps customer satisfaction as its top priority.

Headquartered in Tokyo, FOR-A has been manufacturing products for the broadcast industry for 40 years, including a wide range for sports production.

“The main reason why we became SVG sponsors is to increase our exposure in the sport industry and demonstrate the strength and breadth of our product range to this market,” says Pedro Silvestre, sales director, FOR-A Corp. of America.

“We’ve been extremely successful with our frame-rate converters, production switchers, and video writers in the sport-production industry, and we wanted to show the industry the high-end quality of the rest of our line.”

FOR-A’s primary focus for the sports industry is on production switchers, such as the HANABI 300HS-350HS and 4000HS. Its frame-rate converters are used worldwide for transmission of such events as the World Cup, NBA games to Europe, and U.S. Open golf and tennis tournaments.

FOR-A also manufactures a super-slow-motion HD camera — the VFC-7000 — as well as the FA-9500 signal processor, video writers, and LTO-5 tape video recorders and archive systems.

“We introduced our new super-slow-motion HD camera last year, and it is ideal for slow-motion replay during sporting events,” says Silvestre. “The new LTR-100HS LTO-5 recorder would be a very strong addition to any sports truck or sports-production facility.”

Earlier this year, Pacific Television Center (PacTV), a provider of global-transmission and live-broadcast-production services, installed several new FOR-A products at its Los Angeles facility: three FRC-7000 HD frame-rate converters, two HVS-300RPS 1M/E multiformat production switchers, and one MBP-100SX MXF clip server.

One of PacTV’s three FOR-A FRC-7000 HD frame-rate converters was used last year to backhaul the Commonwealth Games from Delhi, India, to CBC in Canada.  This transmission, which ran for 10 days, involved real-time conversion.

“HD sports, such as hockey and golf, pose unique compression challenges to any frame-rate converter,” says PacTV Project Coordinator Jakob Nielsen in a press release. “We need a frame-rate converter intelligent enough to distinguish between small or steady objects moving in the foreground and very fast-changing, visually busy backgrounds.”
