LTS Showcase Preview: A Roundup of Exhibitor Offerings, Part 1

The 2011 League Technology Summit is fast approaching, and SVG will have more exhibitors on the Technology Showcase floor than ever before. In the weeks leading up to LTS, we will be highlighting the new products and latest technologies that will be on display at the New York Hilton Dec. 13.

AXON
The AXON Synapse product range is the heart beat of the company. Currently, the Synapse family comprises more than 300 modules, representing many years of R&D. The development process is on-going and evolutionary, intended to ensure that Synapse meets customers’ needs today and tomorrow.

The Synapse system continues to grow. Compact, lightweight, and energy-efficient, the new SynCross is a Synapse-based, simple expandable video-routing system with capacity ranging from 8×8 to 40×40. It is capable of switching 3-Gbps, HD-, and SD-SDI signals and compressed-domain signals, such as ASI/DVB and SSI/SMPTE-310.

Also new from AXON is the SLD100, a long-time delay for SD-SDI uncompressed baseband video. It can store and delay up to 1 hour of SD material, including all blanking, as raw data.

Calrec Audio
Calrec Audio’s newest member of the Artemis family introduces a compact processing rack dedicated to delivering DSP and routing capabilities in a 4RU enclosure.

Like all Artemis consoles, Artemis Light incorporates Bluefin2 high-density signal processing and Hydra2 networking technologies in the compact yet powerful and scalable control surface used by Artemis Shine and Beam.

Also, the Artemis Light can be fully integrated with any existing Hydra2 network.

The Artemis Light DSP card uses the powerful Bluefin2 architecture to provide 240 input channels that can be assigned as mono, stereo, or surround paths. Up to 16 main outputs and 48 audio groups can be assigned as mono, stereo, or surround from a pool of 72 busses, as well as 48 track and 24 auxiliary output busses.

DiGiCo
Hosted by its U.S. distributor, Group One Ltd, DiGiCo will showcase its latest digital broadcast offerings: the newly launched Purple Box optical converter, two digital broadcast consoles (SD10/24 and SD11-B), and a pair of new remote racks (SD-Nano and SD-Mini).

Housed in a 1RU rack-mount device, the Purple Box CAT5/MADI-to-optical converter has two completely independent I/O structures, allowing conversion from coaxial MADI to optical or vice versa.

The SD11-B incorporates true broadcast functionality, such as surround busses with multichannel folding and unfolding, mix minus, talk to direct/mix minus out, and complete 5.1 monitor matrix with a 48×6 source-to-speaker selection.

DiGiCo’s SD-Mini rack is a 4RU box, and the SD-Nano is a 2RU optics-only SD rack.

DTS
The DaySequerra iLM8 Intelligent Loudness Meter uses the industry-standard ITU-R BS.1770 loudness measure to determine the perceived loudness of 5.1-surround and auxiliary stereo programs simultaneously; the DTS Neural Loudness Measure algorithm provides accurate readings of dynamic audio content. The iLM8’s high-performance headphone amplifier allows monitoring in noisy background environments; built-in Ethernet interface provides the capability for logging and field software updates. An HD/SDI option enables eight channels of de-multiplexed audio to be routed to the AES inputs; channel mapping is provided for all 16 SDI audio channels. The iLM8’s Mix Monitor alerts the user if desired loudness is outside user-defined limits.

I-MOVIX
I-MOVIX partnered with EVS on the new X10 camera, which delivers 300-fps real-time continuous extreme slow motion in full HD (or 600 fps in 720p). It is designed to combine with the EVS XT3 server and LSM controller to give production teams the capability of continuous slow motion at frame rates far in excess of existing systems.

I-MOVIX will also show the latest version of SprintCam Vvs HD, the ultra-slow-motion system for HD live broadcast production. Featuring the outstanding quality, performance, and usability of SprintCam technology, Vvs HD operates at frame rates of up to 2,700 fps in 1080i50 or 5,800 fps in 720p60 (200 times slower than live action) and provides instant replay at native HD resolution and image quality.

Motorola
Earlier this year, Motorola Mobility announced that ESPN will use its video-distribution solution to transition all programming for ESPN and ESPN2 networks to an MPEG-4 HD format, freeing up bandwidth to increase the number of HD services offered and positioning ESPN to offer both 1080p60 HD and 3D TV programming when service providers are ready for it.

Motorola’s solution comprises the SE-6601A MPEG-4 encoder, which preserves exceptional video quality while decreasing bandwidth consumption; the DSR-6100 integrated receiver/decoder (IRD), which uses MPEG-4–to–MPEG-2 transcoding to bridge to legacy operator services; and a highly flexible software control system. As both ESPN and ESPN2 transition to all MPEG-4 HD, Motorola’s system will distribute programming in full-resolution HD while providing legacy MPEG-2 HD and SD services to ESPN affiliate operators, without requiring additional satellite bandwidth.

NVIDIA
NVIDIA GPUDirect for Video reduces the latency in moving video to and from a GPU when using video I/O cards. This new technology is a free API that will allow third-party hardware to interface more directly with NVIDIA Quadro and Tesla professional GPUs to deliver video with the lowest possible latency. Allowing third-party hardware to access the power of NVIDIA GPUs directly and openly for graphics or parallel processing will redefine the limits of what’s possible using workstations in real-time video production. This technology is aimed at those who want to import video and export the video as fast as possible.

Rimage
Rimage will showcase a new video-authoring solution paired with its automated disc-production system. Rimage Quick Authoring software enables users to grab video files in multiple formats, fly through an easy-to-use wizard, click the mouse a couple times, and, in minutes, have an authored, chaptered, recorded, and printed DVD in hand. Or five. Or 50. Or 500. The software enables easy export from edit systems and allows users to back up and archive digital-camera content, archive game footage, create highlight reels, and copy-protect any content.

SOS Global
SOS Global Express will open an office in London next year to coordinate its Live Event logistics activities in the UK, Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

The company’s projects this year included its 24th consecutive Super Bowl; tennis and golf majors worldwide; Asian Winter Games in Kazakhstan; X Games coverage in the U.S./China and Europe; U.S. presidential coverage in Asia, Europe, and South America; and a project providing more than 150 air charters to Japan after the March earthquake and tsunami. Also, the team handled two of the most highly anticipated and viewed TV shows: American Idol and Extreme Makeover.

SOS Global is finalizing plans to support customers from around the world during the 2012 London Olympics. It will have teams in place to support everyone on the ground and trucks and warehouses available to support the Games.

Studer
The new 22-fader option for Studer’s Vista 5 M2 range of digital broadcast and production consoles is intended to enable the lowest-cost Vista ever. Like the bigger 32- and 42-fader versions, the new model is optionally equipped with new TFT metering, capable of displaying signal levels from mono to 5.1 channels on each input, with a configurable lower area that can be used to display bus assignments, surround images, or History Mode, in which a scrolling audio waveform displays signal anomalies and highlights them for up to 50 seconds to allow the engineer to identify where the event occurred.

VidOvation
VidOvation’s new In-net GoalCam 60-GHz wireless technology was customized to fit the most demanding needs of the National Hockey League. Fully uncompressed video with no bit or resolution manipulation and 60-GHz–wireless capability offer uncompressed and uncoded broadcast-quality video at a competitive price point. An RF transmitter and camera are integrated in a custom, ruggedized housing with an extruded aluminum tube with polycarbonate shock-resistant domes on each end. A safety and quick-release positive registration bracket adjusts to all mounting applications.

The GoalCam incorporates internal lithium-ion batteries to support up to five hours of operation per charge, and the receiver unit mounts overhead to receive the 1.5-G HD-SDI signal using two BNC reclocked HD-SDI outputs.

Wohler Technologies
Among the monitoring products demonstrated by Wohler will be the new DVM-2443 MPEG video monitor, the enhanced AMP2-16V audio/video-processing monitor, and the recently upgraded MADI-8 audio monitor. Now the exclusive SoundField distributor for the Americas, Wohler will be showing a range of solutions for surround-sound studio and OB applications, including SoundField’s surround-microphone systems for single-point–source acquisition, the UPM-1 stereo-to-5.1 upmix processor and plug-in software, and the new X-1 audio upmix/downmix processor.
