NAB 2012: Canon To Feature HD Field Lenses for Sport-Broadcast Applications

Canon will showcase the new XJ95x8.6B super-telephoto HD field lens, which is designed for demanding sports and outside-broadcast applications. It provides high-resolution, high-contrast optical performance for the capture of images that are sharp across the 16:9 HD image plane. The XJ95x8.6B comes standard-equipped with an improved built-in Canon optical Shift-Type Image Stabilizer, the CAFS (Constant Angle Focusing System) to help counteract lens “breathing,” and outputs for focus, iris, and zoom-position data for use with virtual studio systems.

All of Canon’s HD long-zoom field lenses are designed for demanding HDTV sports and outside-broadcast applications. In addition to the new XJ95x8.6B super-telephoto HD field lens, these “DIGISUPER” models also include the XJ100x9.3B, XJ86x9.3B/13.5B, and XJ75x9.3B, all of which feature Canon’s built-in Shift-IS Image Stabilization technology for obtaining steady images even at the furthest zoomed-in distances. All models feature an advanced, computer-aided lightweight design, specialized multilayer coatings on each optical element, and Canon’s second-generation digital servo systems for improved ease of operation. This exclusive technology also provides: superb tactile control of zoom, iris, and focus; precision repeatability of settings; and microcomputer compensation of lens-focus breathing (the inadvertent alteration of field-of-view when camera operators adjust the focus control).

Canon Auto Focus technology is available for two of these long-zoom HD field lenses: the XJ100x9.3B IE-D AF and XJ86x9.3B IE-D AF. Utilizing an adjustable-focus window appearing in the viewfinder for camera operators to reference, this Canon Auto Focus feature has three modes: Part-Time, which auto-focuses as long as the operator presses a button (handy for quick focus confirmation or instant on-demand follow-focus); Full-Time, for situations that entail tracking subjects in rapid motion such as horse, dog, or auto races, as well as full-servo robotic applications; and Off, for traditional fully manual focus operation.

Among the many other products at Canon’s NAB 2012 exhibit are advanced remote-control robotic HD PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras, which include models for indoor and outdoor use. These turn-key, fully integrated HD cameras employ a non-proprietary, open control protocol that works with all leading third-party remote-control systems. Advanced connectivity (including genlock input for video synchronization in broadcast television systems) and a Genuine Canon HD zoom lens make these cameras perfect for sports use (they are installed in most major baseball parks in the U.S.) and also as HD POV cameras for broadcast weather and traffic coverage, for houses of worship, for legislative chambers, and for many other HD broadcast-quality applications.
