NAB Perspectives: Signiant Combines Ease of Cloud With Terrestrial Security

At the 2012 NAB Show, the cloud was on everyone’s lips, tossed around as the answer to issues stemming from data storage to file transfer and more. To address the space and security issues posed by the cloud itself, Signiant introduced Media Shuttle, the latest addition to its suite of file-movement products.

VP of Marketing Lisa Clark notes that Media Shuttle allows content to reside securely on the user’s network.

Media Shuttle offers the benefits of public cloud-based file-sharing services without the file-size limits or security risks associated with storing high-value assets in the cloud. Unlike services that store content in the public cloud, Signiant Media Shuttle provides an easy-to-use interface to the cloud but maintains content within the secure control of the enterprise network.

“We’ve extended our product suite for the sports-production community with the new Media Shuttle,” says VP of Marketing Lisa Clark. “This really embraces a lot of the trends that we’re seeing in the marketplace today, which are ways that you can embrace the cloud to make money, save money, or just become more efficient.”

Media Shuttle is based on the same security and acceleration protocols for high-speed file transfers as Signiant’s core infrastructure products and provides centralized visibility of transfers, including job status, bandwidth usage, and user activity. Acceleration of media movement enables sports producers to integrate clips from live events into concurrent programming, while centralized visibility allows senders and recipients to track the progress of media, see when it was sent, and check when it is received. Media Shuttle’s checkpoint restart feature automatically restarts the system if, for any reason, the media path is stopped.

Most important, says Clark, Media Shuttle brings security to the media transfer. “The unique thing about [Media Shuttle] is, it stores the media on [the user’s] network, so this media, which is how they make their money, is not out there in the cloud, subject to piracy or any kind of security risks. It moves in an accelerated fashion over our transport software and then resides on their network for added security.”
