FOX Sports San Diego to Televise “Battle On The Midway”

FOX Sports and Syndicus Entertainment announced that FOX Sports Networks (FSN) will be the national television distributor for the inaugural “Battle on the Midway” basketball game to be held aboard the flight deck of the historic USS Midway Museum anchored in San Diego Harbor.

The game is set for Friday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. PST and features San Diego State and Syracuse in what will be the 2012-13 season opener for both teams.

FOX Sports distributes the game nationally on FOX Sports Networks (FSN) and its affiliates. The game is televised locally on FOX Sports San Diego, San Diego’s first and only 24 / 7 regional sports network, which launched earlier this year.

“We are honored to participate in this amazing event and to televise the game not only in San Diego, but across the country as well,” said Henry Ford, Senior Vice President and General Manager of FOX Sports San Diego.  “It will also be a great opportunity to showcase the proud legacy of the USS Midway and to pay tribute to our service men and women and the military community here in San Diego.”

“We’re very excited to announce FOX Sports as our national broadcast partner for the Battle on the Midway events,” said Michael J. McLees, Executive Producer, Syndicus Entertainment. “FOX Sports is a leader in sports event production and this game presents an amazing canvas to create a spectacular and emotional weekend in support of our troops and veterans. The setting on the USS Midway Museum will provide a touching and remarkable backdrop.”

Hall of Fame sports broadcaster Dick Enberg is on site to call play by play. Additional production details, including the selection of Mr. Enberg’s broadcasting partner, will be announced at a later date.

The matchup features two of the winningest active coaches in college basketball – Syracuse’s Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim and Steve Fisher of San Diego State. The Aztecs are coming off a 26-8 season and are the reigning Mountain West Conference Champions. Syracuse University, champions of the Big East regular season, finished their season at 34-3 after an Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The schools have met only once before, with Syracuse beating SDSU in the second round of the 2007 postseason NIT. That was the only meeting between Fisher and Boeheim, both of whom have won a national championship.

The “Battle On The Midway” is part of a larger Veterans Day weekend series of events in San Diego. It kicks off several events centered on the Midway and along the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego.

Proceeds from the game will benefit several national and local veterans organizations.

Commissioned a week after the end of World War II, the USS Midway was the longest-serving U.S. Navy carrier of the 20th century and largest ship in the world between 1945-1955. More than 225,000 Americans served on the USS Midway during its active duty. After serving as the Persian Gulf flagship in Desert Storm, the Midway was retired in 1992 and became a floating museum in San Diego Harbor in 2004.
